Game Design Rule Modification Activity

#1

Redesigning an existing game is a great way to teach about the elements of a game.

  1. Starting with a simple game often works best. Tic-tac-toe and the card game “War” are two favorites for this activity.
  2. Identify as many of the game rules as you can.
  3. Pick one rule and change it.
  4. Test out the new game. What worked well? What didn’t? Was it fun?
  5. What further changes could you make to improve the game?
